ENTERTAINER Vybz Kartel was yesterday offered $3-million bail in the Supreme Court, a development that could put him closer to being released from jail should he secure bail in the magistrate’s court today.
Kartel, along with three other men — fellow deejay Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell; fashion designer Calvin Haye; and Cayro Jones — are to appear before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court where bail applications are expected to be made on their behalf.
Today’s expected application is in relation to the murder on August 16 of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams. The victim’s body is yet to be found but the prosecution has said that it has video and telephone evidence in the matter.
Kartel’s legal team, comprising Tom Tavares-Finson, Michael Deans and Chris Tavares-Finson, was forced to go in chambers in the High Court to apply for bail after magistrate Opal Smith last month refused to grant the entertainer bail.
During the bail application, the senior Tavares-Finson submitted, among other things, that Kartel was not a flight risk and that statements served on the defence by the prosecution showed a clear recant by the witness in the matter.
Should Kartel be released from lock-up, he would have to report daily to the Constant Spring Police Station, according to yesterday’s bail offer. The deejay, whose real name is Adidjah Palmer, will have to also surrender his travel documents and be subject to a curfew order that requires him to be at home between certain hours of the day.
Yesterday’s bail offer was in relation to the murder in July of Barrington ‘Bossie’ Bryan in Gregory Park, St Catherine. Kartel is also facing charges of conspiracy to murder, illegal possession of a firearm and possession of ganja stemming from the same incident.
Kartel is to appear before the magistrate on this matter on December 21. There is also a tentative preliminary enquiry date of February 3, 2012.
