DANCEHALL entertainer Mavado is to face trial on a charge of assault on May 16 next year.
The trial date was set when the entertainer — whose real name is David Brooks — appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The charge stems from an incident at Quad nightclub in New Kingston on June 12 while the deejay and friends were attending the birthday party of fellow entertainer Bounty Killer. It is alleged a melee occurred during which, Brooks’ childhood friend, Conroy ‘Connie’ Edwards was shot by an off-duty policeman. He died later at the Kingston Public Hospital.
Yesterday, Brooks’s attorney Chris Tavares-Finson told the Observer: “We know that at the end of the day, Mr Brooks will be freed of the charge against him.”
Tavares-Finson also raised questions over the fact that the policeman who shot Edwards has not been charged. “We find it quite interesting that Mr Brooks is the only individual charged from the incident, considering that somebody has lost his life,” the attorney said.
